Hi,

First of all, if you are interested in cross-platform app development, hopefully you have heard of the Intel® Integrated Native Development Environment (Intel® INDE) product -- it's a toolkit that helps C++/Java* developers quickly and easily create, compile, debug, analyze, and ship apps on the Windows* and Android* platforms. Intel INDE is targeting application developers looking to develop for multiple platforms -- we're seeing numerous customers who have developed Windows* apps and now want to get started with Android*.

The goal of this blog is to help you get the most out of using Intel INDE. Every two weeks I'll blog about a different Intel INDE topic that I believe would be of interest to the user community. Your feedback on the usefulness of this blog would be appreciated, especially if you have some questions or topics you would like to see me cover.

As an introduction, my background has been developing, optimizing, and supporting graphics applications on a variety of platforms. I've had exposure to a broad spectrum of application area, including MCAD, GIS, EDA, and Finite Element Analysis. Currently I'm a Senior Technical Consulting Engineer (TCE) with the Intel Software and Solutions Organization (Intel SSG), and my product expertise is with Intel INDE and the Intel® Graphics Performance Analyzers (Intel® GPA).

So back to Intel INDE... I thought my first blog would provide you a road map of some useful information about the product.

  • Where should I go for information about Intel INDE?
I would recommend that you start with the Intel INDE home page. Here you can find the most up-to-date information about the product, and check out the links to other key information. There's a wealth of info about getting started with the individual tools as well. And most importantly, from this page there's a link for downloading the product.

  • But I don't know whether I need/want Intel INDE!
I have two recommendations for you. Start with the Intel INDE FAQ, where we answer some basic questions like "what is Intel INDE"; you can also get licensing information, and we list the minimum system requirements (OS, physical memory, and so on). There's not much technical detail in the FAQ, so if you need specific product information check out the Intel INDE Product Brief. This document includes a paragraph or two on each of the tools available -- after reading this you should have a pretty good idea whether Intel INDE is a product that can help solve your cross-platform development needs.

  • Wow! Intel INDE is what I want, so how do I download and install it?
OK, the short answer is to get it from the Intel INDE home page (there's a nice little button in the upper right-hand corner of the page), but you'll need an Intel® Developer Zone (IDZ) account first (if you already have one, you'll need to login to your IDZ account first). The Intel INDE version available now is a no-charge Beta release; the "Gold" release is expected later this year. Though the installation should be self-explanatory, to help you out there's an Installation Guide which will walk you through the different options available when you install the product. For example, you need to figure out which Android* IDE you'll be using -- Microsoft Visual Studio*, Eclipse*, or Android Studio*. Next, what other tools (such as Java*) must be installed before Intel INDE. The installation guide is especially useful if you're just getting started with Android* development, and this "quick start guide" is focused on the minimal amount of info for a new user.

  • OK, I've downloaded and installed Intel INDE, but I need some help and have some suggestions for improving it.
Check out the Intel INDE support forum. This forum is monitored by Intel personnel (such as myself), and we look forward to also hearing about whether the product has been useful for you, including any suggestions you have for making the product better. Especially important is if the product doesn't match your development workflow -- let us know about what you're trying to do and what feature are missing from Intel INDE.

  • I'm interested in cross-platform development, but I don't develop using C++/Java*; does Intel have any other tools?
Yes, there are other options available for you. For example, if you are developing system software, check out Intel System Studio. If you are looking for HTML5 development options, check out the Intel XDK.

So if you have any other thoughts on what should be included for the first-time user of Intel INDE, please let us know!

Thanks!

Neal

PS -> By the way, the Intel INDE team will have a few people attending IDF this year in San Francisco. I'll be giving a presentation on Intel INDE, and we'll be at the Intel booth giving demos on the product and it's components. And of course it's a great opportunity to let us know more about your cross-platform development challenges!
